About Me

Hi my name is Isabella Thomas and I am a sophomore majoring in Child Development with a minor in psychology. I am passionate about children which is what led me to pursue this major in hopes of becoming an Occupational Therapist. Growing up in Nashville, I had access to exceptional schools which gave me the opportunity to learn about this major. I want to focus on why Child development is a female dominated major and what you can do with the major.

Influence

My biggest influence is my mom. From a young age, my mom had always exposed me to working with children and the special joy she had from working with them inspired me to pursue this path. My mom is the director of all therapy services in the Metro Nashville Public School System and during her 20 plus years she has only worked with 10 male co-workers or supervisors. She is my sole inspiration for my future career path and has inspired me to become an Occupational Therapist.

Elevator Pitch

My project is over my community Child Development with an emphasis on why the institute is female dominated. Women make up 85% of child development institutes while men are only 15%. I want to focus on why that might be along with the opportunities and careers that come with this major. I believe the main way to help this issue is by educating people on the opportunities with this major and how it does not need to be dominated by women.

Mentor Text

I chose this video highlighting Dr. Karyn Purvis for my mentor text because she was the woman who co-founded the institutes of Child Development here at TCU. This video highlights her path to become the educated woman she was and how she got involved at TCU. I chose this piece because it highlights Dr. Purvis, but what is not mentioned is the other co-founder Dr. David Cross. Dr. Cross is currently the director of the institute and has worked along with Dr. Purvis where he states he learned a lot. Although Dr. Purvis did groundbreaking work for the institution, it displays how women are the forefront of this major.
